Why are Democrats losing working-class voters they thought were a sure thing? Maybe because the party offers them neglect, stagnation, and expensive gasoline.
"Trumpists portray them as criminals, welfare leeches, and job stealers, "
And this is how you show you are still as out of touch as you were at Reason. Trumpists, to use your derogatory phrase, are fine with people of all races, as long as they are here legally, and are not leeches on society. And you would know this if you actually spent time talking to Latino politicians, such as the recently elected Texas lady. Or, see the support for Trump in that community. People don't support people who hate them, it is one of the first rules of politics. But you must have missed that.
Excellent, as usual. But I have to ask, with all sincerity, what American institutions are left to besmirch? Public health? Public safety? National security? Capitalism? The military? Higher Ed? Sports? Media? … Small business owners press on, until they can’t—you might want to check out Nancy Rommelman’s article on Bari Weiss’s Substack today on that score—and naturally relate to the mindset that works best for them. I wish more Democrats would take their cues from the examples you lay out here, but given Gavin Newsom’s gaping recall win, I’m highly doubtful.
Glad to find you again. I used to read your articles on the newsstands in West L.A. when I used to drive my father out to the West L.A. VA Hospital for his doctor visits.
Virginia should check out the economic record of Republicans and Democrats on the stagnation front. The spin does not match the facts.
Since 1933, the economy has grown at an annual average rate of 4.6% under Democratic presidents and 2.4% under Republicans. If Democratic growth had been as abysmal as Republican, our standard of living would be 57% lower!

I used a long time horizon because Trump was an f-up because of the pandemic -- erasing all jobs back to 2015 by the end of his Presidency.
On the other hand, things were not exactly peaches and cream before COVID:
