Your descriptions of street signs reminds me of my trip to Wales in 1974. In the first the town I visited, home to an elderly couple who befriended me and my traveling companion on the last train of Saturday night rushing toward its final destination, I saw a street sign that read WATKIN’, my name without the final “s”. I asked our hosts if that’s the Welch spelling and was informed, not exactly: absence of the “s” signified higher social status. Ha! I thought.
