In addition to the document itself, you can read organizer John Hood’s accompanying essay here. It’s worth a read just for his discussion of the Northwest Ordinance. Had the principles of that law been applied to the Louisiana Purchase, American history would be vastly different, something I came to appreciate when writing the first chapter of The Fabric of Civilization.
