A Couple of Last-Minute Talk Announcements
I'll be speaking in the L.A. area tomorrow and Friday.
As a last-minute substitution, I’ll be giving a talk tomorrow, November 11, at the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild (of which I’m president), which meets in the Health Education Center at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, 15107 Vanowen St, Van Nuys, CA 91405. Since guild members have already heard my standard book talk, I’ll focus on the role of the textile trade in fostering “social technologies,” such as literacy, bookkeeping, and financial instruments:
“Connecting Threads: Textiles, Trade, and ‘Social Technologies’”
From time immemorial, textiles have been among the most important traded goods. As we're often reminded, the history of textiles contains many terrible stories of war, captivity, slavery, and conquest. But it also includes the examples of peaceful exchange and cooperation--and of the inventions and institutions that make them possible. Virginia will share some of the ways in which the textile trade stitched the world together, giving rise to "social technologies" as important as the inventions found in laboratories and factories.
The meeting is open to the public and we validate parking. The meeting starts at 9:00 and I’ll speak around 11. (A Zoom link is also available if you email me at vp@vpostrel.com or in reply to this email.)
On November 17, I’ll be speaking at the Bobbinwinders Handweavers Guild, which meets at the Sanctuary for Spiritual Living, 5446 N Citrus Ave, Covina, CA 91722, (between Arrow Hwy & Gladstone). Enter through the courtyard door on the right. The meeting begins at 9:30 and I’ll speak around 11. In addition to the usual slide presentation, I’ll have items I’ve collected during my research. The meeting is open to the public.
I will have books available for sale and signing at both events.
